Once upon a time...
Why is our campsite called ‘Le Vert Manoir’?
In the 14th century, where the campsite is now located, there was a castle that belonged to the Rabondanges family. It was inhabited over the centuries by several families, Sainte-Aldegonde in 1490, Massiet in 1612, the Marquis de Beaufort and finally Mr Degrave.
The manor house had 52 doors and 365 windows, and was surrounded by spacious gardens with groves and ponds. In 1816, the Duke of Wellington spent the night here; this British general took part in the Battle of Waterloo. Following the imposition of a limit on the number of windows, the Manor was gradually abandoned.
It was demolished around 1920, having been used as a hospital by the British during the 1914-1918 war. All that remains of the campsite today are a few stones in the play area, the stables at the entrance to the campsite and the trees in the boulodrome.
